Summary

You are eligible to vote in the state of Minnesota if you:

-Will beat least 18-years-old on Election Day
-Are a citizen of the United States
-Will have resided in Minnesota for 20 days immediately preceding Election Day
-Have any felony conviction record discharged, expired, or completed
-Are not under court-ordered guardianship where a court has revoked your voting rights
-Have not been ruled legally incompetentby a court of law

To register to vote or to update current information, you must complete a voter registration application (pdf) through mail or in person to your county courthouse (to appear on your polling location's roster this must be completed 20 days prior to the election date.)

You are eligible to vote via absentee ballot if:

-You are Absent from your precinct
-You have an Illness or disability preventing you from voting at your polling location
-You are serving as an election judge in another precinct
-You are unable to vote due to a religious discipline or religious holiday
-There is an eligible emergency declared by the governor or quarantine declared by the federal or state government

If you are eligible to vote absentee, you must complete the Absentee Ballot Application and fax or mail it to your county auditor. Your ballot will be sent to you as early as 30 days prior to the election date.

Absentee voters outside the U.S. are eligible to vote under the state of Minnesota and the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act. If you are living overseas and would like to apply for an absentee ballot, please fill out the Federal Postcard Application (pdf) and submit at any time.

  • Deadline to register to vote in November 2008 election: Election Day (November 4, 2008)
  • Deadline to register for absentee ballot in November 2008 election: An absentee ballot can be obtained at any time prior to any election.


Voting Equipment


Each county in Minnesota is allowed to choose which type of voting equipment to use. Currently, counties employ the use of AutoMark, Model 100, Accuvote and Optech IIIP Eagle.
