Summary
You are eligible to vote in the state of New Hampshire if:

-You are a United States citizen
-You are at least 18 years of age (or will be by the date of the next election)
-New Hampshire does not require a minimum amount of time for residency within the state, new residents may register to vote as soon as they move in to their community.

Voter Registrationin New Hampshire can happen by:

1. Applying to your town or city clerk's office whereyou will be required to fill out a standard voter registration form and to show proof of age, citizenship and domicile.
2. Registering with your community's Supervisors of the Checklist. By law they are required to meet on the Saturday 10 days prior to each election. Check the local newspaper(s) or call your clerk's office for the date and time of such meeting.
3. Registering to vote at the polling place on election day at all elections. You will be asked to show proof of age, citizenship, and domicile.


To register as an absentee voter if:

You meet the state's voter requirements and are unable to register in person because of physical disability, religious beliefs, military service, or temporary absence.

To register as an absentee voter, you should request an absentee voter registration affidavit and a standard voter registration form from your town or city clerk, download it online or send a written request including required information and return at least 30 days prior to an election. The affidavit must be witnessed and then both the affidavit and the voter registration form are to be returned to the town or city clerk.

-Armed Services voters may apply for absentee ballots from the town or city clerk in the town or city which he or she was domiciled prior to entering the service. Armed services voters are eligible to vote for all offices.
-Overseas Citizens may register to vote absentee in any federal election in the town or city in New Hampshire in which they resided prior to their departure from the United States regardless of whether the person maintains a residence in said city or town and even if their intent to return is uncertain.

Deadlines
  • Deadline to register to vote in November 2008 election: Unregistered voters may register to vote on November 4, 2008
  • Deadline to register for absentee ballot in November 2008 election: Clerks may accept completed absentee ballot submissions in person until 5 p.m. the day before an election or until 5 p.m. on election day if received through the mail.

New Hampshire uses three types of voting machines, Accuvote, Optech and paper ballots. The accuvote ballot requires the voter to fill in an oval next to a candidates name, after voting the voter places the ballot in an optical scanning machines which reads the votes cast. The Optech voting process requires the voter to complete an arrow next to a candidate's name, the voter then places the ballot in an optical scanning machine which reads votes cast.
